Inspiration

The idea for EchoChef was born out of our collective desire to contribute to a greener world but it had to be something niche enough to be unique. We all liked restaurants and decided to google the carbon footprint for it. We saw and realized how big of a contributor restaurants are to the world's carbon footprint and decided that should not be the case. A restaurant is a place to be enjoyed but if the place is also harming the planet, well that just can't stand.

What it does

EchoChef recommends restaurant appliances for either new establishments wanting to plan or already existing restaurants. The recommendations are made with these criteria: name, cost, eco rating, energy consumption, and an additional one depending on which appliance they search for. It also offers energy analysis with the products customers choose.

How we built it

We used Java for the whole thing. The GUI was done by Abdul. The classes were done by Raihan. The functions were done by Tejae and Shiv.

Challenges we ran into

The first problem we truly faced was trying to set up our GitHub desktop space. We wanted to make it so that we could make or change code without having to manually upload the files each time we make a minor change. That never worked out and ultimately we gave up on it.

The second problem we faced was the feasibility of the project. The idea we have is ideal but the execution of our idea could have taken a lot longer, but we did not have that time. We HAD to finish it in a day.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Finishing most of it in a day. Our team worked tirelessly but in the end, somehow we were able to pull it off and finish the project. It is not well polished but nonetheless, we are proud of ourselves for making it work till the end.

What we learned

The amount of time and effort put into this is a lot more than we first initially thought. It was stressful but it felt like the good kind of stress. The communication was a very key component and it helped us through all of it. We split the work well. We also learned that no matter previous experience, you WILL have something to do in the group and will be able to contribute in some way.

What's next for EcoChef

If possible we could make this into a full-fledged app across devices. EcoChef at the moment is really barebones but has really great potential.
