Inspiration

We were inspired to design a website on waste management from the MAD-learn keynote. We were inspired to take an issue and design a solution. ECHO not only raises awareness, but also provides a solution to one area that could crucially affect waste management.

What it does

Our project is a web app that informs the user of the waste happening around the globe, and offers ways to become more sustainable.

How we built it

We built this project on Qoom with using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. W3 Schools was our main area of research.

Challenges we ran into

As this is my first time learning coding, I found it difficult to pick up three new languages all at once in a short matter of time. Thankfully, my sister has some experience, and was able to teach me throughout the project. However, this is my sisters' first time using Qoom, and so she was new to the software, and found it harder to teach me using a software she is unfamiliar with. In addition, nearing the end of our project, we wanted to change the URL of our website. However, this process was not as easy as we expected. We ended up having to spend time recovering our project due to an unexpected error when moving files. We adapted to the circumstance and worked through it to solve the issue.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is my first time being in a hackathon, as well as it is my first time ever coding. I am proud that we worked effectively as a team and I learned a lot from the workshops, as well as from my sister. My sister, and teammate, is proud of being able to not only refresh her coding skills, but to use this opportunity to teach me more about coding.

What we learned

Personally, I learned a lot about the coding world and how much effort it takes to design a website. This experience was a 'behind the scenes' of all the components needed to form a working web-app. My sister benefited from this experience by learning how to become a better teacher and adapting to a new software.

What's next for ECHO

We hope to add more features and games to our website in the future! Furthermore, we are considering developing a prototype for the reusable Tri-Folds, and reaching out to companies who do not need the plexi-glass anymore.
