Inspiration
Echo started with something I saw in my own home.
I have a younger brother who, like many children today, can spend hours watching YouTube and scrolling through social apps. I noticed that while these platforms are incredibly good at keeping children engaged, they can also replace opportunities to speak, interact, and build real social skills.
I wanted to imagine a different kind of screen time: something that is just as engaging, but encourages children to speak, listen, interact, and learn instead of passively consuming content.
That idea became Echo.
Echo is a tiny bird who wants to become a zoo guide but has forgotten the names of the animals. The child helps Echo by saying each animal's name, then proves they understood it by identifying the correct animal. Every successful interaction brings the zoo to life: a new animal joins, Echo celebrates, and eventually the child completes the entire zoo.
I wanted the experience to feel less like doing an educational exercise and more like helping a friend.
The current project is an MVP built around five animal names, combining speech recognition, visual recognition, positive feedback, and a rewarding zoo completion moment. One of the biggest challenges was making the experience encouraging for young children. Instead of giving harsh pronunciation scores, Echo gives children multiple chances and responds with "That's okay" when something doesn't work.
But this is only the beginning. I imagine Echo growing into a much larger world where children can create their own animals, add custom pictures and sounds, practice many different skills, and even interact and learn together with other children. The goal is to explore how technology can support the social and communication skills that too much passive screen time can sometimes replace.
I don't want Echo to keep children away from technology. I want to explore what better screen time could look like: technology that encourages children to actively participate, communicate, and develop skills they can take with them into the real world.
