Echo — Autonomous Sustainability Officer

Inspiration

It didn’t start with code. It started with discomfort.

We kept seeing dashboards that reported sustainability, but none that actually acted on it. Numbers sat there like quiet warnings, while decisions—real, impactful decisions—were still left to busy humans juggling ten priorities.

Echo was born from a simple but powerful question:

What if sustainability had a voice, a brain, and the authority to act?

Not a tracker. Not a report. But an Autonomous Sustainability Officer—one that thinks, predicts, nudges, and executes.

We wanted to turn climate responsibility from a passive metric into an active system. Something alive. Something that responds.

What it does

Echo is an AI-powered command center that transforms raw financial and operational data into real-time sustainability intelligence—and action.

The Pulse (Homepage)

A living, breathing overview of your organization’s environmental health.

  • Interactive Orion constellation representing departments
  • Real-time carbon ticker + net-zero countdown
  • AI-powered command bar for instant insights

The Orion Command Center (Dashboard)

Where decisions happen.

1. Fiscal-Carbon Twin

  • Dual-axis visualization of spending vs carbon impact
  • Detects inefficiencies automatically
  • Explains why emissions spike, not just when

2. The Simulator

  • Drag-and-drop sustainability actions
  • AI generates 5-year projections instantly
  • Produces executive-ready summaries

3. Anomalies Feed

  • Swipe-based anomaly handling system
  • Learns user behavior and adapts decisions
  • Converts alerts into actions in seconds

Echo API (Winner Feature)

  • Plug-and-play API for external apps
  • Turns Echo into a platform, not just a product
  • Enables ecosystem-wide carbon intelligence

How we built it

Echo is a fusion of design, data science, and intelligent systems.

Tech Stack

  • Frontend: Next.js + Tailwind (Glassmorphism UI)
  • Backend: Supabase (Auth + PostgreSQL)
  • AI Engine: OpenAI (natural language + simulation logic)
  • Fintech Integration: Stripe / Plaid APIs
  • Data Visualization: Recharts / D3.js

Intelligence Layer

  • Pattern detection for anomalies
  • Predictive modeling for emissions
  • Behavioral learning from user decisions

Challenges we ran into

Building Echo felt like assembling a spaceship mid-flight.

1. Time vs Ambition

We had ~5 hours, but the idea demanded weeks. We had to aggressively prioritize what felt magical over what was simply complete.

2. Data + Carbon Mapping

Linking financial transactions to carbon output wasn’t straightforward. We had to approximate intelligently while keeping it believable and scalable.

3. Making AI Feel Instant

Users expect real-time responses. Balancing AI processing time with UI smoothness required clever loading states and predictive UI.

4. UX Complexity

We were building for founders, engineers, and sustainability leads—all with different mental models.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Turning Sustainability into Action

Echo doesn’t just show problems—it suggests and executes solutions.

The Simulator

A feature that compresses years of decision-making into seconds.

Command Bar Experience

Typing a question and watching the UI respond intelligently feels like magic.

Glassmorphism UI

A futuristic, command-center aesthetic that matches the ambition of the product.

What we learned

1. Simplicity Wins

Even the most complex systems need intuitive interfaces.

2. AI is Most Powerful When Invisible

The best AI doesn’t feel like AI—it feels like intuition.

3. Speed Matters More Than Perfection

In hackathons, momentum beats completeness.

4. Systems Thinking is Everything

The real innovation wasn’t a feature—it was how everything connected.

What's next for Echo

Echo is just getting started.

Autonomous Actions

Move from suggestions → fully automated sustainability decisions.

Real Carbon Data Integrations

Partner with carbon tracking providers for precise measurements.

Team Collaboration Layer

Enable multiple stakeholders to interact with Echo simultaneously.

Advanced Predictive Models

Use deeper ML models for long-term climate forecasting.

Ecosystem Expansion

Scale the Echo API into a global standard for carbon reporting.
