About the Project

Inspiration

The rising concerns of mental health challenges among students and educators inspired me to create Echo Link. With the increase in anxiety, stress, and burnout in educational environments, I wanted to develop a solution that provides both immediate and ongoing support. I envisioned a platform that not only helps students but also educators, who often face their own mental health struggles, yet lack the resources to cope.

What I Learned

Throughout this project, I learned the importance of building accessible tools for mental health support. I gained experience in integrating AI-driven features like mental health check-ins and creating safe spaces for peer interactions. This project taught me how technology can bridge gaps in mental health services, especially in environments with limited resources. It also enhanced my understanding of user experience, as I had to ensure that the platform was simple, intuitive, and welcoming for users.

How I Built the Project

I used React to build the front-end of the platform, with a clean and responsive design that adapts to various devices. The project’s core features include:

  • AI-powered mental health check-ins: Users answer a few questions to receive tailored support resources.
  • Peer support network: A safe, moderated environment for students and educators to connect and share experiences.
  • Well-being resources: Curated content to help users manage stress, anxiety, and mental health challenges.

For back-end support, I utilized Firebase for real-time messaging and data storage. I focused on building an easy-to-navigate interface with clear calls to action, so users can quickly find help when needed.

Challenges

One of the main challenges I faced was ensuring the platform’s accessibility and moderation. Mental health discussions can be sensitive, so I implemented a strong moderation system to ensure a safe environment for all users. Balancing this with user privacy while maintaining a welcoming and supportive community was challenging but crucial. Another difficulty was integrating the AI-driven check-ins smoothly, ensuring it was both effective and non-intrusive.
