Inspiration
With the pandemic, it has been increasingly hard to socialize and easier to pick up new hobbies- so why not use a hobby to socialize with others? While socially isolating, many learned how to make homemade food for the first time and embrace the culinary universe. Food holds a special place in everyone’s hearts, whether it’s the taste of your mom’s cooking, or the first meal your significant other made for you. We created a social platform where foodies can connect with one another, share dishes from their unique cultures, and create stronger bonds in the world because we believe food can connect and inspire others no matter what the circumstances are.
What it does
Eats creates a public food diary for users so they can share their creations with everyone. During this time when we are isolated from our family and friends, we can share recipes and pictures of food on Eats to digitally bring back the feeling of dinner parties and lunches with our loved ones.
How we built it
We built it through the platform Repl.it, and used the languages HTML, CSS, and Javascript. We also created the mobile app through thunkable.
Challenges I ran into
Some challenges that we ran into during this project were that as a group collectively, we were inexperienced in making an active website through HTML and CSS, although we had basic knowledge. We overcame these shortcomings by using multiple resources such as Youtube and W3 School in order to create a visually appealing and functioning site with animations, such as button hovering. This was also the first time some of our team members used repl.it.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Accomplishments that we were proud of was the end product, which we thought was aesthetically pleasing, and had a set color scheme that seemed both fun and homey. Because we found out how to add text shadows, we were able to create a visual effect with the button text which we thought gave our buttons depth. We are also proud that we reached our goal of creating a platform that could connect others during the pandemic.
What I learned
What we learned through the creation of the website, were the use of
, and using tables in order to arrange our images in a set line. We also learned how to create animations, with durations that would slowly enlarge the image. What's next for Eats
The next step in our plan for Eats is to expand our platform, by having interactive features such as liking, commenting, and sharing other people’s posts that are prominent in other social media platforms such as instagram. We would also want to introduce a tagging feature, that could separate the food posts into more specific categories, such as Mexican food, or Korean food.
