Inspiration

Travelers often see unfamiliar food at hotels, restaurants, and markets but do not know what it is, how to eat it, which utensils to use, or what local customs to follow. EatLocal Lens was inspired by the idea that food should feel like a welcoming cultural experience—not something confusing or intimidating.

What it does

EatLocal Lens is a travel-food companion that helps people understand unfamiliar dishes.

A traveler uploads a food photo, chooses the closest dish from the guide, and receives simple information about:

• How to eat the dish
• Which utensils to use
• Common pairings
• Important allergy reminders
• Local food customs

This demo focuses on French food, including croissants, brie, escargots, oysters, crème brûlée, and quiche Lorraine.

How we built it

I built EatLocal Lens as a responsive web app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

I used Codex with GPT-5.6 to help design the user experience, create the interactive food-guide flow, write the dish information, and refine the interface. The app uses a warm, travel-friendly visual style designed to make food discovery feel simple and enjoyable.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was making the experience useful without requiring travelers to know the name of a dish first. I also wanted the app to be clear about allergy reminders and cultural guidance without presenting it as medical advice.

For this hackathon demo, I focused on a curated set of French dishes so the experience is reliable and easy to demonstrate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that EatLocal Lens turns a simple question—"How do I eat this?"—into an approachable travel experience.

The project combines practical eating guidance, local customs, and a clean interface in one place. I also created a working demo, a public code repository, and a short product video.

What we learned

I learned that a strong AI product idea starts with a specific human problem. People do not only need to identify food—they need confidence in how to enjoy it respectfully.

I also learned how Codex can accelerate building a complete prototype, from interface design to implementation and project documentation.

What's next for EatLocal Lens

EatLocal Lens is an idea prototype created to demonstrate a simple vision: helping travelers feel confident when they encounter unfamiliar food.

This project shows how one easy-to-use guide can explain what a dish is, how to eat it, and the local customs around it. The goal is to share this concept and start a conversation about making travel food experiences more welcoming for everyone.
