Inspiration

We are hungry and broke college students. We decided to come up with an easy way to find affordable restaurants in every student's area.

What it does

EatCents finds up to 50 restaurants in the city that the user chooses that are up to $$ as the price level on Yelp.

How we built it

We used the Yelp API, Python, HTML, dash, and VSCode to build our project.

Challenges we ran into

This was the first hackathon for all of our group members. As first year students who are not advanced in React, Dash, nor HTML, it was challenging to develop the frontend portion of our project and connect it to the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the frontend website of our project. It took hours to complete the website with its various functionalities. As students who were new to frontend development, using HTML and Dash was very challenging, but with the help of the mentors, we were able to develop a solid frontend and a backend to create a functional website for EatCents.

What we learned

We learned how to use APIs and develop frontends more comfortably, but we also learned that there are many skills we can learn involving technology. Many of the VenusHacks mentors were experienced in many programming languages, platforms like React or Flask, and other technologies. It was inspiring to get help from the mentors.

What's next for EatCents

We plan to expand the program to include currencies outside of the dollar sign and expand the program's data limit of 50 restaurants. We also plan to implement more options and give information about each restaurant, such as a link to directions.
