Inspiration

Donating food is harder than it seems. During the holiday season, plenty of companies hold food drives where you can bring your canned goods to a convenient location, and the rest of the work is done for you. But what about if you have food to donate at any other time of the year? You'd have to find a food bank near you, find a time to go (which is usually only during working hours on weekdays), and spend the time driving there and back. It's much easier to throw out your food. What if there was some way to donate your food, with little to no effort on your part? We present to you: Eat It.

What it does

Eat It. is a website which connects you with food banks, and allows you to donate food by simply leaving it at your curb! As a user, you can select a food bank near you, choose a pickup date, place the food at your curb on your chosen day and voila! Your food will be picked up between the hours listed. Congratulations, you've just helped reduce the problem of overconsumption and made the world a better place.

How we built it

We built the website with HTML, CSS, and plain JavaScript. To host our site, we used Autocode :)

Challenges we ran into

With a limited amount of time, it was difficult to get everything we wanted done, and we had to limit the scope by a lot. Since this was the first time working with these programming languages for the majority of the team, figuring out JavaScript capabilities and implementing them error-free was a huge challenge. Navigating between different pages, as well as connecting the front-end to the back-end were two of our biggest challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to create a well-designed UI, and create all the functionalities working in our back-end.

What we learned

Since this was the first time building a website and working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the majority of the team, there was definitely a huge learning curve. Going from nothing to being able to build a website was an incredible accomplishment, and we all definitely learned/improved our JavaScript skills drastically.

What's next for Eat It.

In the future, Eat It. will be able to allow a user to login and receive points for their food donations.
