Inspiration
The name 'Eat and Worry' is a common term in Liberia, referring to informal food credit businesses where families can access food now and pay later. While this practice is well-known, it has yet to be harnessed effectively to address the broader issue of food scarcity in the country. Despite the availability of food credit, many families in Liberia still struggle with hunger. It's not just about affordability; a significant portion of the population is living paycheck to paycheck, making it difficult to secure enough food when they need it most. According to the World Bank, over 50% of Liberia's population lives below the poverty line, and many households face severe income instability (World Bank, 2022). As a result, the existing food credit systems don't fully meet the urgent needs of families, highlighting a crucial gap in addressing food insecurity.
What it does
This project is essentially a food credit system, where families receive their food upfront (at the beginning of the month), but they pay for it once they have the necessary funds—typically when their salary or income arrives later in the month.
How we built it
By utilizing Gemini's API, I crafted a project that ensures a seamless conversational flow, while also automating payment tracking and reminder notifications for users.
Challenges we ran into
Though there weren’t any significant obstacles, I couldn't help but worry about the risks of implementing a food credit system in a country where so many families live paycheck to paycheck. That’s where AI comes in—it can help us better understand consumer behavior, predict payment cycles, and ensure families don’t overextend themselves, making the system more reliable and safer for everyone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
I firmly believe there's still much to learn, but in a short time, I've realized that with the right application of AI, many of our challenges—especially in systems like food credit—can be effectively addressed. AI can help by predicting payment patterns, ensuring fair credit allocation, and optimizing supply chain management, ultimately making the system more efficient and accessible for families in need.
What's next for Eat and Worry
Next for Eat and Worry is launching a pilot program with a select group of families in my network, while also focusing on addressing the critical issue of food scarcity in Liberia.
