Making Aerodynamic Customization More Accessible

Inspiration

Our project was inspired by the idea that improving and customizing a vehicle should not require expensive modifications or complicated installation processes. Aftermarket spoilers can enhance a vehicle's appearance and influence its aerodynamics, but installation can be intimidating for everyday drivers. We wanted to explore a design that balances aerodynamic considerations with accessibility, affordability, and ease of installation.

What We Built

Using a 2017 Toyota Camry as our reference vehicle, we developed a concept for an easy-to-install aerodynamic spoiler. We used Fusion 360 to work with the vehicle model and develop spoiler concepts, exploring different shapes and configurations. We then used AirShaper to visualize airflow around the vehicle and investigate how different spoiler geometries might affect airflow near the rear of the car.

Our design process focused on comparing spoiler profiles while considering practical factors such as mounting, structural stability, and manufacturability. Rather than assuming that a larger spoiler automatically performs better, we used aerodynamic visualizations to guide our design decisions.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we learned how computer-aided design and aerodynamic visualization can support engineering decisions. We also gained a better understanding of the trade-offs involved in spoiler design, including the relationship between geometry, airflow, and practical installation requirements.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was working with an imported vehicle mesh composed of multiple separate bodies. Scaling and transferring the model between Fusion 360 and AirShaper created difficulties with model dimensions and simulation results. We had to adapt our approach and prioritize visual airflow comparisons rather than relying on questionable numerical measurements.

Ultimately, this experience taught us that engineering involves more than developing an idea. It requires troubleshooting, evaluating limitations, and making informed decisions with the tools available.
