Inspiration Furniture manuals often assume you already know how to identify parts, interpret diagrams, and use tools. For first-time builders and people who struggle with visual instructions, that can make a simple task frustrating. We created EasyPiece-y to make assembly easier to understand and approach with confidence.
What it does EasyPiece-y guides users through supported furniture manuals with interactive 3D animations. Users can rotate, zoom, replay, and complete each step before moving forward. It shows the right tool, focuses on important connections, and offers slower explanations when someone gets stuck. It also remembers difficulties and preferences for future builds.
How we built it We built the interface using React and TypeScript, with Three.js and React Three Fiber powering the 3D simulations. We mapped supported IKEA manual steps to prepared animations and added browser-based storage for progress, preferences, and learning history. Our prototype includes LACK and the first SMÅSTAD desk-and-storage configuration.
Challenges we ran into The biggest challenge was translating flat manual diagrams into clear 3D movements and orientations. Small details—like screw holes and similar hardware—needed careful attention. We also had to balance detailed guidance with a simple interface so beginners could get help without feeling overwhelmed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We created working, step-by-step simulations for two products, with connection close-ups, transparent views, and contextual tool lessons. We also built adaptive guidance that responds to repeated replays and remembers confirmed difficulties. Users can export replay feedback to help manufacturers identify confusing steps.
What we learned Realism alone doesn’t make instructions accessible. Showing the correct hole, explaining orientation before movement, and giving each step a clear finish condition can be more useful than adding visual complexity. We learned to prioritize what helps someone successfully complete the next action.
What's next for EasyPiece-y We want to support more products, improve the accuracy of the 3D models, and test the experience with first-time builders. We also plan to expand language and accessibility options and develop a manufacturer dashboard that highlights where users repeatedly need help.
