Inspiration
Motivation for our EasyEats project stems from the growing issue of food insecurity in Canada. According to data from the Canadian Income Survey, food insecurity rose from 16% in 2021 to 18% in 2022, affecting vulnerable groups like single mothers, Indigenous communities, and Black families the most. Nearly half (48%) of single mothers below the poverty line and 40% above it faced food insecurity. Indigenous households in Canada experience food insecurity at rates 2 to 6 times higher than non-Indigenous households, with limited access to traditional foods on reserves. With about 35 million tons of food waste in Canada, restaurants contribute about 9% or 4.5 million tons of food waste annually. EasyEats addresses these challenges by providing personalized, affordable recipes tailored to various income levels, dietary restrictions, and time constraints.
What it does
This is where EasyEats comes in. Our platform is designed to address these critical challenges by offering personalized, affordable recipes. We cater to various income levels, dietary restrictions, and time constraints.
With EasyEats, users can input their budget, preferred ingredients, and dietary needs, and our platform will generate tailored meal options. Our aim is to empower individuals and families to make healthier eating choices, despite any financial or geographical barriers they may face. Through EasyEats, our team aims to mitigate food insecurity by allowing users to eat healthier meals, in spite of the financial or geographical barriers they are facing and reduce food waste.
How we built it
The frontend was made with HTML/CSS, Javascript, and React. The backend functionality was made using FastAPI, and Python, and database functionality was created using Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into include building an interface with multiple functions within the given time constraint and also a creating a visually appealing app that encompasses a number of backend features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use React and creating an application from scratch that effectively makes homemade personalized recipes more.
What we learned
The importance of an aesthetic app and clean UI. We also learned how to collaborate and capitalize on team members' individual strengths.
What's next for EasyEats
Expanding to restaurants and being able to deploy it so that it helps people on Canadian reserves.
