Inspiration
One in five students, or 15-20% of the population, has a language-based learning disability like dyslexia. That's where Easy2Read comes in. Easy2Read was built to help people with dyslexia by capturing and converting fonts in real time to dyslexic-friendly fonts. This work is inspired by my personal experiences with friends while advocating and learning from community members in the disability space.
Inspiration derived from my childhood friend, Isaac, who struggled with dyslexia. For me, reading was an enjoyable hobby, not a challenge. With Easy2Read, the goal is bridge the gap for those who struggle with this all-too-common disability.
What it Does
Runs on iOS mobile devices utilizing the Apple Camera. Hover over a single line of text to convert it to Comic Sans, a dyslexic-friendly font!
How We Built Easy2Read
This application used a pre-existing Apple Vision API that had a sole, hard-coded purpose to detect phone numbers via RegEx.
Our team has since redesigned and completely rehashed the machine learning logic, removing RegEx character processing, and modifying its purpose entirely. Using the iOS camera functionality, we utilize machine-learning techniques to detect the correct characters, using search logic to ensure valid and speedy results.
What We Learned
With absolutely zero SWIFT, iOS, and mobile app development experience, the learning curve was steep. By furiously learning new concepts such as machine learning and OCR development utilizing Apple Vision API dev tools, the last 14 hours were an unforgettable experience. We hope that this experience was valuable not only to us but also to our friends that need it most.
