Inspiration

Every day the media tells us many people got infected with COVID-19 around the world.

But what are these numbers telling us?

It is clear that an increase of 1000 cases in Luxemburg does not mean the same as such an increase in China. The number of habitants in every country put such an increase into perspective. The same goes for the growth rate, how fast is the virus spreading in each country in comparison with yesterday? Understanding the data in such a way gives us a much clearer picture of what is going and is a first step to understand which public measures are potentially working.

What it does

We created a map which visualizes the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, as well as the number of recovered people and deceased people per million inhabitants according to the John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. Whats more, the map visualizes the growth rate at which the virus is spreading in each country giving the user a much clearer perspective of the current situation.

Thew map updates itself every time the user access the site and gives an overview over time. The user can also see the development of the pandemic as of January 22nd, 2020.

--> The map is open to the public in a newly developed website

How we built it

We used R for all the underlying calculations. Leaflet to create the map. And Shiny R to make the map interactive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We did not know how to create an interactive map before this challenge. We learned so much along the way and this map can help so many people, like us, to keep the COVID-19 numbers we see everyday into perspective

What's next for Easy COVID-19 Map

Launch the site & make our map known. We want to make people understand COVID-19 better We are also working to create a new variable visualizing the active number of COVID-19 around the world!
