Weather apps tell you the temperature. EarthWatch helps you understand the bigger picture. 🌎

Our team built EarthWatch around a simple question: Is this unusual, and how sure are we?

Inspired by experiences with El Niño in Peru and extreme heat in San Diego, we wanted to make climate information easier to explore, understand, and question.

EarthWatch brings global climate outlooks, local weather, historical baselines, and AI investigation into one interactive globe. Users can explore NOAA outlooks, compare current conditions with 1991–2020 local history, track seasonal risks, and investigate Pacific climate signals.

The part we’re proudest of is how it investigates evidence. A code-based Sentinel checks the source signal. Grok-powered agents investigate possible explanations and impacts. A separate Skeptic challenges unsupported conclusions, and code enforces limits on what the report can claim.

The resulting assessment distinguishes observations, forecasts, reported impacts, and inferred explanations, with sources and clear uncertainty.

Our San Diego heat-wave demo shows why that matters: EarthWatch examines unusual temperatures, documented disruption, and local weather drivers while discussing El Niño’s broader influence without claiming it caused that specific event.

EarthWatch is a working prototype for climate understanding and decision support. Our goal is to help students, communities, and planners move from scattered information to a clearer understanding of what deserves attention.

AI should show its work and tell you how sure it is.
