Inspiration
This project was made through deep consideration of the "constellations" theme provided. In means of making something of importance with scalable impact, a project regarding connecting people into knowing the city's current climate conditions was made to help raise awareness about possible environmental issues and help others start working towards a cleaner place.
What it does
It provides data of the city: real conditions, every community garden in the city, and suggestions of what can be done based on the weather and air right now. An interactive map is provided for users to discover what the conditions of each part of the city are like, and what gardens are they able to go to if they feel the need to check it out or volunteer.
How we built it
The website was built with a Javascript, HTML, CSS frontend, with sleek modern UI and interface. The backend was built by purely Python that extracts data from three different APIs that is taken to be displayed on the frontend. Fixed JSON files were used so suggestions of actions that can be done are given based on environmental conditions within the backend.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges we ran into include frontend development, struggling to have all the code run smoothly without sacrificing the integrity of the project. Features were forced to be cut off due to time limits, and overall debugging was especially difficult, forcing meticulous analyzation to keep the code running correctly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments that we're proud of is that we were able to utilize the data from three APIs, and extract them to create a nice-looking website that serves a impactful purpose in the community. The code runs well, and is overall what we consider as a good, complete product.
What we learned
We learned how to connect the backend and frontend together when utilizing two different coding languages (Javascript, Python), and were able to smoothly have the APIs hide their API keys so not secret information would be stolen.
What's next for Earthstars
Earthstars is a project made during Hyphen Hacks to fit the theme of "Crafting Constellations." It's unlikely that the project will be continued to develop, though possible implementations of expanding to state-level/national-level is possible.
