Inspiration
We were inspired by a staggering reality: around 40% of geothermal drillings fail, wasting billions of dollars every year. Each failed well represents not just a financial loss, but also a missed efforts to accelerate the clean energy transition.
At the same time, an enormous amount of renewable potential remains undiscovered, hidden beneath our feet or scattered across landscapes that traditional surveys overlook. Despite decades of data collection, developers still rely on fragmented, static tools to make billion-dollar siting decisions.
EarthQuest was born to change that. We envisioned a platform that could “read the planet”, combining planetary-scale imagery, environmental intelligence, and adaptive AI to uncover where geothermal, solar, and wind projects can thrive before a single dollar is risked.
Our goal: to eliminate costly guesswork and unlock the Earth’s untapped renewable potential.
What it does
EarthQuest continuously analyzes global imagery, land use, topography, grid evolution, and climate patterns to pinpoint the most promising renewable energy sites.
The platform learns from every new satellite pass and grid update, uncovering high-potential zones months or even years before conventional tools.
The result: faster discovery, fewer missed opportunities, and dramatically lower exploration costs; all with scientific transparency built in.
How we built it
We combined the world’s most comprehensive geospatial datasets with adaptive AI architectures inspired by the latest generation of foundation models.
Our approach integrates:
- Multi-layer satellite and environmental data pipelines
- Dynamic learning models that adapt to new Earth signals
- A unified visualization interface for developers, utilities, and investors
No other entity today is merging the breadth of Google’s planetary-scale Earth data infrastructure with modern generative and predictive AI. This fusion allows EarthQuest to interpret the planet’s evolving patterns with unprecedented accuracy.
Challenges we ran into
Building a living, learning map of the Earth wasn’t simple. We encountered challenges in:
- Harmonizing terabytes of geospatial data across diverse regions and formats
- Training adaptive models to stay stable amid evolving environmental signals
- Maintaining trust, interpretability, and explainability in AI-driven decisions
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We successfully built a working prototype that integrates massive-scale satellite data with adaptive AI models; something no team had achieved before within our timeframe.
We proved that AI can not only interpret static maps but also learn from the Earth’s dynamic, evolving signals to predict renewable potential in real time. Our system identified high-value renewable zones that were previously overlooked, validating the power of combining environmental science with machine intelligence.
We’re also proud of creating a transparent and explainable interface, enabling users to trace every recommendation back to its environmental and data-driven roots.
What we learned
We learned that innovation happens at the intersection of disciplines where geospatial engineering, climate science, and AI converge.
Integrating planetary-scale datasets taught us the importance of data harmonization, validation, and interpretability. Building adaptive models revealed how fast environmental and grid conditions evolve and how critical it is for technology to evolve with them.
Most importantly, we learned that AI is not just a computational tool; it can become a planetary-scale partner in driving climate action when grounded in data integrity and scientific transparency.
What’s next for EarthQuest
Next, we aim to scale EarthQuest beyond prototypes and pilot regions into a global renewable siting intelligence platform.
Our roadmap includes:
- Expanding coverage to include wind, geothermal, and hybrid energy systems
- Partnering with governments, developers, and investors to guide early-stage project planning
- Integrating live policy, grid, and land-use data for real-time siting forecasts
- Enhancing the AI to simulate environmental, financial, and social trade-offs for each potential site
Ultimately, our goal is to make EarthQuest the definitive intelligence layer for the world’s clean energy buildout, helping humanity deploy renewables smarter, faster, and more sustainably than ever before.
