Inspiration For the rise in earthquake frequency and intensity worldwide, I wanted to design a project named EarthquakeMonitor_MSFabric that will send an alert on time and also provide radical insights into how communities could prepare and respond effectively towards earthquakes. What it does EarthquakeMonitor_MSFabric is a pipeline and alerting system that processes real-time earthquake data through the USGS API. It cleans and transforms the data, enabling users to follow seismic activities and receive alerts for significant events. The system automatically identifies earthquakes based on their magnitude and then sends its notifications in email services, which are mainly categorized into those with high magnitude and a possible tsunami threat.
How I built it I implemented the system by using Microsoft Fabric based on Data Factory to process and automate data. The pipeline fetches quake data every day at 6 AM while utilizing the Geocoder library in converting geographical coordinates into human-readable locations. I integrated data triggers to monitor real time, thus being able to immediately generate and dispatch alerts.
Challenges I encountered: For one, though in ensuring the accuracy of the cleaning and transformation processes, more especially involving different formats for coordinates, it really required some efforts in control of its processes. Second, the automatical data retrieval configurations with an alert system also required much effort in details so that there could be on-time, effective notifications.
Accomplishments I'm proud of I am particularly proud of automating the entire pipeline for data. This enables us to seamlessly import updates into each day and real-time monitoring with no delay whatsoever. One of the most significant successes is putting robust alert mechanisms in place for major earthquakes and possible threats of tsunamis, thereby providing very important support to those communities at risk. What I learned I learned in depth about how data was processed and transformation techniques and why automation was required in the analysis of real-time data. I did appreciate that effective alert systems were important for disaster preparedness and response. What's next After this, I will increase the scope of the system with advanced analytics and data visualization tools to present an overview of the trends about seismic activities. The alert system also needs to be enhanced by incorporating SMS notifications and mobile apps to reach greater coverage.
