Inspiration
I often encountered situations where my mother asked me to water the plants, but I never felt motivated to do it. However, reading about global warming and climate change due to deforestation made me wonder: What can I do to help?
Even though our generation is aware of environmental damage, many of us still hesitate to take action, thinking, “What difference will one tree make?” I don’t want future generations to have this mindset. Instead, I want them to be motivated to create change and actively make the Earth a better place for themselves and the future.
So, what if I built a platform that not only informs kids about environmental challenges but also shows them exactly how to get started?
What it does
We created Earthify, a gamified platform where kids can join as a school community, complete eco-friendly tasks, and see their real impact on the environment and learn about it. • The tasks are designed creatively to keep kids engaged. • A leaderboard fosters healthy competition among students, motivating them to complete more challenges. • A virtual Earth base visually represents their impact. Initially, it appears heavily polluted, but as students complete tasks, it transforms into a greener, healthier planet. • Kids earn virtual trees (points) for completing tasks, which they can redeem for real-world vouchers. • Once a school community completes a set number of tasks, we collaborate with NGOs to organize real-world environmental events like tree planting and beach cleanups—further encouraging students to continue their eco-friendly actions.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Firebase to develop Earthify. Firebase handles user authentication, data storage, and task verification.
Challenges we ran into
• Designing a system that keeps kids engaged without making tasks feel like a chore.
• Ensuring smooth real-time updates when tasks are completed and verified.
• Implementing a fair reward system that balances virtual incentives with real-world impact.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Successfully building an interactive virtual Earth model that visually responds to completed tasks.
• Creating an intuitive platform where students, teachers, and NGOs can collaborate seamlessly.
• Designing an engaging leaderboard system that encourages kids to take action.
What we learned
• Gamification can be a powerful tool to drive real-world change.
• The right incentives encourage people to take eco-friendly actions.
• Community-driven efforts are key to making a significant environmental impact.
What's next for Earthify
• Expanding partnerships with more NGOs and schools to scale impact.
• Introducing personalized task recommendations based on students’ interests.
• Developing a mobile app for better accessibility.
• Implementing AI-powered insights to track and measure environmental progress in real time.
With Earthify, we’re not just raising awareness—we’re empowering kids to take real action and become the changemakers of tomorrow. 🌍✨
