Inspiration

My inspiration comes from the desire to protect our future and create a world where we can thrive. I want to live in a world where we no longer lose biodiversity or contribute to the warming of the Earth. I’m passionate about spreading awareness of these issues because, no matter how small the effort, every action counts. Even the smallest change can spark a bigger movement, and by contributing, we can collectively create a lasting impact on our environment.

What it does

This is a well-designed and built website that tells you about many environmental issues we are facing in the world right now, and how we can combat them. On top of that, there is a carbon footprint calculator that takes in distance driven daily, electricity use, and amount of waste per month, and calculates your carbon footprint. You can then use this information to learn what you need to reduce to try to lower your footprint to the maximum.

How I built it

I built it using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. But most of the time was spent on researching and finding problems and fixes to them. Then I would add it as a point, and add some CSS to it to make it look nice and appeasing. Then I used JavaScript to make the carbon footprint calculator, which takes input, and return an estimate of much kilograms of CO2 you are producing.

Challenges I ran into

Some problems I ran into were when researching, the answer wouldn't always be the first thing that popped up. I had to go dive in deeper, and sometimes I wouldn't get a definitive answer, so I would have to spend more time researching for a part that I intended. Also, another problem I ran into was that I had some issues making the JavaScript work as intended. It would have bugs, and I would be figuring out what is wrong and debugging for a while. Then it was hard to find what calculations I needed to do in order to get the proper answer out onto the website.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm very proud of the fact that I completed a full, proper website that can actually be useful in the real world, and had a distinct feature, that not a lot of other websites online had, the carbon footprint calculator. Furthermore, I learned how to debug efficiently, write clean code, and add text to the website via JavaScript.

What I learned

I learned a lot more about the environment than I already knew. I learned about new problems, new solutions, and I think this project helped me learn a lot more about the environment than I would've known if I hadn't done this.

What's next for EarthEthic

I think the only thing next for EarthEthic is just regular updating. When there is a new problem, I will add it to the website and try to find out the solution for it and how we could maybe fix it. I could also try to add more parts to the carbon footprint calculator to make it more comprehensive and specific.
