Inspiration

Earthchain was born from a desire to combat climate change in an innovative, accessible, and rewarding way. We wanted to empower individuals to take direct action by planting trees while leveraging cutting-edge technology like blockchain and AI to ensure transparency and impact. Our vision is a world where sustainability and economic incentives grow hand-in-hand, branch by branch.

What it does

Earthchain is a decentralized platform that allows users to plant trees, have them validated by an AI model that only validates newly planted trees, and earn carbon credits as those trees grow. These credits can be traded in various markets, creating a financial incentive for environmental good. Powered by blockchain technology, Earthchain ensures every transaction—whether purchasing a tree or trading credits—is secure, transparent, and traceable. It’s a marketplace where individuals can actively contribute to a greener planet while being rewarded for their efforts.

How we built it

We built Earthchain with a combination of modern technologies:

  • Frontend: A user-friendly interface with pages like Home, About, Register, Login, and a Welcome dashboard to guide users through their journey.
  • AI Validation: An AI model with high accuracy verifies newly planted trees based on uploaded data, ensuring only legitimate contributions are added to the marketplace.
  • Blockchain Integration: We integrated MetaMask, a popular Ethereum wallet, to securely handle tree purchases and carbon credit transactions. Every action is recorded on the blockchain for transparency.
  • Backend: A robust system connects the AI validation, blockchain, and user interactions, ensuring seamless operation from planting to trading.

Challenges we ran into

  • AI Accuracy: Fine-tuning the AI model to accurately validate trees while avoiding false positives was a significant challenge. We iterated extensively to achieve high precision.
  • Blockchain Integration: Ensuring smooth MetaMask connectivity and handling transaction costs on Ethereum required careful optimization.
  • User Adoption: Designing an intuitive experience for users unfamiliar with blockchain or carbon credits meant balancing education with simplicity.
  • Scalability: Building a system that could handle a growing number of trees, users, and transactions without compromising performance was a technical hurdle.
