Inspiration
The ocean is vital for human well-being. Covering over two- thirds of the planet, it contains rich biodiverse habitats, provides invaluable ecosystem services, is central to global food security, and absorbs significant amounts of heat and carbon dioxide. The ocean also presents immense opportunities for economic growth, employment and development.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development projected a doubling of the ocean economy from 2010 to 2030, to reach USD 3 trillion and employ 40 million people.
The ocean is under immense pressure from a wide range of human activities and this will increase unless we take bold action to ensure the protection of its natural resources. Pollution from plastics, offshore oil and gas, shipping, sewage, and fertiliser and agricultural runoff are significant challenges. Rapid urbanisation of coastal zones further aggravates pollution, habitat loss and resource pressure. Because of ineffective fisheries management and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, many fish
The deteriorating status of species, habitats and ecosystems is the result of a wide range of activities by human societies that measure their well-being mostly through economic parameters which do not (or only marginally) factor in the services provided by nature.
IN 83 PERCENT OF THE OCEAN, AT LEAST A QUARTER OF THE SPECIES ARE THREATENED
What it does
Earth school is a virtual reality learning app where students can learn have access with earth with virtual simulation and solve micro task in other to earn rewards
We created an virtual reality skylar application on oculus quest for students to learn about the ocean and the issues that the aquatic environment is facing, gain hands on experience of earth analytics tools and how to tackle global issusmes
How we built it
We build skylar with unity engage using C# language.
Challenges we ran into
We are beginners in C# language for virtual reality development. This was the first time we a building an app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have built our first prototype through this hackathon
What we learned
We’ve gained hands-on experience through the workshops and we have seen practical ways to apply programming in the real world.
What's next for Earth School
We are going to be testing Skykar with real users, we will go to different schools to see how students interact with these games and get parents/teachers' feedback, we will then proceed to build the main product by considering the feedback we’ve gotten.
