Riding an actual crane of HIAB brought us three challenges for the VR experience to be solved, which is motion sickness, safety of coworkers, and distance perception.
Motion sickness occurs because of the difference between body and camera movement, and researchers found out that asians feel the dizziness more severely than for westerners. Since the driver’s body do not rotate with the the boom on HIAB's crane, on our solution, the camera only moves with head movements, reducing motion sickness significantly.
Safety is always important not only for us drivers, but also for the coworkers. Since hearing is a key sense to understand the surroundings with the vision. Our solution brings ‘3d surround sound’ from outside into the cabin, helping you know where things are.
We also heard about concerns for distance perception. So in our solution, when grabbing a mini top view is shown to increase accuracy of grab. Also, we modified the FOV so that users can feel the correct distances of the objects. We went further and designed the actual marketing plan. We can help drivers to get used to VR with our simulator. We can promote with borrowing HIAB products during the repair period. We also can install a billboard at roads near grapple crane station.
