Inspiration
The global e-waste crisis inspired us to create E-Waste Soko. The improper disposal of electronics harms the environment and misses the opportunity to recover valuable materials. Living in communities where e-waste is often burned or dumped, we wanted to create a sustainable solution that could protect the environment, incentivize responsible recycling, and engage the community in the circular economy.
What It Does
E-Waste Soko is a platform designed to tackle e-waste by:
- Simplifying Recycling: Users can schedule e-waste pickups or participate in community collection drives via our app or website.
- Incentivizing Participation: Participants earn tokens for recycling, redeemable for groceries, school supplies, or other essentials through our local business partnerships.
- Promoting Awareness: The platform provides educational content on the environmental impact of e-waste and the importance of recycling.
- Connecting Stakeholders: We link recyclers with a consistent supply of materials, reducing their costs and streamlining their operations.
How We Built It
- Research and Ideation: Studied the e-waste lifecycle, recycling technologies, and community needs to design an impactful solution.
- Development:
- Frontend: Built a user-friendly web and mobile interface for scheduling, tracking, and accessing rewards.
- Backend: Used a database for inventory management, user profiles, and rewards tracking.
- Integration: Partnered with certified recyclers and local businesses for seamless material recovery and token redemption.
- Frontend: Built a user-friendly web and mobile interface for scheduling, tracking, and accessing rewards.
- Testing and Feedback: Conducted user trials, refined workflows, and iterated on the design based on feedback.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Community Awareness: Educating users on the environmental impact of e-waste and encouraging participation took significant effort.
- Logistics Management: Coordinating pickups, storage, and transportation required detailed planning and optimization.
- Resource Constraints: Limited funding and infrastructure challenged our ability to scale, but we focused on creating a lean and effective system.
- Technical Issues: Building an intuitive yet powerful app involved debugging and improving performance iteratively.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Successfully launched a prototype that combines environmental impact, community engagement, and economic benefits.
- Built partnerships with local recyclers and small businesses to ensure the system's sustainability.
- Engaged community members in environmental education, leading to increased awareness about responsible e-waste disposal.
- Designed a scalable rewards system that benefits both users and local businesses, fostering a win-win ecosystem.
