Inspiration

Our inspiration for creating the E-waste facility locator website stemmed from a shared concern for the increasing environmental and health hazards caused by improper disposal of electronic waste. We wanted to empower individuals to make responsible choices when disposing of their old devices while raising awareness about the harmful components within e-waste.

What it does

The E-waste facility locator website is a user-friendly platform that offers several key features:

E-waste Collection Locator: Users can easily find the nearest e-waste collection and recycling facilities by entering their location. The website provides a list of nearby facilities, along with detailed information such as addresses, contact details, and operating hours.
Educational Pop-ups: While using the website, users receive informative pop-ups highlighting the harmful components of e-waste and their detrimental effects on the environment and human health if not disposed of correctly. These pop-ups aim to raise awareness and encourage responsible e-waste disposal.
Device Model Input: Users have the option to input the model of their old device. The website calculates and displays credit points relative to the amount of precious metals that can be recovered from the device if disposed of correctly. This incentivizes users to make environmentally conscious choices.

How we built it

We built the E-waste facility locator website using a combination of web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a backend database for facility information. We incorporated geolocation APIs to help users find nearby e-waste facilities. Additionally, we implemented a database of e-waste components and their environmental impact for the educational pop-ups. The credit point system was developed to quantify the environmental benefit of proper disposal.

Challenges we ran into

During the development process, we faced challenges related to data accuracy for facility locations, ensuring the credit point system was fair and transparent, and designing the user interface to be intuitive and informative. Integrating the geolocation feature also presented technical challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a practical and informative tool that can significantly contribute to reducing the negative impact of e-waste on the environment. Our team successfully combined technology and education to encourage responsible e-waste disposal.

What we learned

Throughout the project, we gained a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding e-waste disposal, including its environmental and health consequences. We also honed our web development and data management skills.

What's next for E-waste facility locator

In the future, we plan to expand the website's coverage to include even more e-waste collection and recycling facilities worldwide. We also aim to collaborate with manufacturers and recyclers to provide users with incentives and discounts for proper disposal. Moreover, we intend to create a mobile app version of the platform for greater accessibility. Ultimately, we hope to continue raising awareness and driving positive change in the way electronic waste is handled and recycled.
