Inspiration

A lot of us growing up in a hispanic household, found ourselves at a young age trying to explain the school system and when it came to going to college it became even harder to explain some things. I want to eliminate that, E-Scholar comes in both Spanish and English.

What it does

The app increases financial literacy by having the parent be involved in how a student obtains their scholarships as well as gets access to educational resources both the student and their parent. This app aims to also bring parents and their kids closer as they work together to accomplish educational goals. So the app begins by asking the user, if they speak spanish or english, the app depending on that answer will have all the text in the picked language already. In my case, my parents would leave me "alone" to handle my school stuff because they didn't quite understand it. Here how it goes: So after creating an account since you are a new user, you will get a screen where you can add information about your child like are they into sports, arts, music, etc. The point of that is so that the app can start searching scholarships that actually apply to your child and where their chances are higher. If you the user (a parent) only speak Spanish, don't worry! The app is in Spanish, you'll be able to make decisions and say your opinion on the matter because the language barrier will no longer be an issue. You get to see what the scholarship is about, what's the prize as well as read more on the companies. Aside from that, the app has a part where you will get articles weekly talking about the finances in college, what would be the best card for a college kid just starting out as well as maybe an article talking about the differences between a scholarship, grant and loan. You will be able to keep track of the money your child earns from scholarships. The profile in this app is your child, your child chooses their top schools or dream schools and you are able to see the progress of your scholarship money when applied to your schools tuition.

How we built it

I used Figma to be able to show my app visually.

Challenges we ran into

There was one challenge I ran into and it was time. I wish there was more time to actually work on it and do some html/css and maybe involve a database to store the data better.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Proud of what this app could do for a community especially here in Miami where the majority of us are hispanic. I think this is an issue my local neighborhood faces because of the language barrier once kids start going to school and getting more comfortable with English.

What we learned

I learned how to prototype in Figma, learned how to think as a user, and learned how important time management is.

What's next for E-Scholar

I hope to actually move on from just prototype to an actual app and implement some python which is what I'm learning at the moment. I believe this app can really help families come together and be proud of accomplishments together.
