  VR learning experience

Inspiration

With the out break of the covid 19 pandemic, the Education sector in our society is adapting to online methods of learning. Our school institutions now encourage students to learn online. Back in the university where I come from, this change was quickly adapted but we found learning online boring. E learning left from the normal text messages and voice records on WhatsApp, into video conference using google meet and zoom calls. Online lessons have always not been effective for me because it is difficult for me to concentrate. students even though present in an online google meet class, will be sleeping or doing other things while the lessons are going on but yet will answer present in class. Even when concentrated, the face to face interaction, non verbal communication and the demonstrations the teacher will make to ensure that lessons are understood was still lacking. This caused my team an i to start looking for a solution to this

What it does

E Lewa is a mobile application that comes together with a virtual reality headsets where a user can scan themselves and a personalized avatar is generated for them in the virtual world. The can then put on their VR headset and join a class with familiar environment scanned and created by their teachers. Present in the Virtual world, this students can listen to their teacher teach with illustrations, interact with other students like in their normal physical class environment but in the Metaverse.

How we built it

So far we have built the web version with php being the preliminary language for dB, and MySQL for database connections and also using java for the mobile version

Challenges we ran into

We face a lot of challenges on the algorithm to approach to approach scanning and generating avatars that will have accuracy and precision of a real life human being. Also, getting the right VR headset to use was a major come back since the version needed wasn't available commercially in our stores here in Cameroon and could only be order from amazon which will take more time to arrive here. We finally settled for BOBO VR Z4 while building E lewa

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have come so far with creating the app making it linkable to VR devices and having interactions

What we learned

Starting on this project as an novice in VR/AR programing, we hard to do a lot of research how it works and how we could go ahead an create VR application

What's next for E lewa

E lewa is yet a unique approach in the online learning world. we envision the use of E lewa in all universities and higher education in Cameroon for the start
