Inspiration

The AI-powered tool for Dyslexic readers, Equit.IO, focused our attention on the lack of software applications meant to support those with Dyslexia. Further investigation of this gap in technology emphasized the need for more apps catered towards the development of reading in Dyslexic children who struggle with reading and comprehension.

What it does

Our app expands vocabulary and comprehension skills for Dyslexic children through engaging, AI-generated short stories. These stories are centered around four main themes: Forest Friend, Galaxy Quest, Magical Castle, and Secret Island.

By selecting a theme, Gemini generates four short stories, each paired with answer choices where the correct option is indicated.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React + TypeScript
  • Backend: Python + FastAPI
  • AI Integration: Gemini API for generating stories, prompts, and answer choices
  • Design: Default font is OpenDyslexic for readability, with an option to switch to Poppins in settings

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully incorporated the power of Gemini 2.5 Flash to create all the interactive stories. This boosted our team’s efficiency and allowed us to focus on frontend and backend development.

What we learned

  • Learned to use Figma for frontend design and page layouts
  • Gained experience building a web app for a specific audience (children with Dyslexia)
  • Enhanced our attention to detail through accessibility-driven development

What's next for DyslexiQuest

We plan to improve the game with additional features:

  • Provide more Dyslexia-friendly font options
  • Implement a text-to-speech function for auditory learners
  • Enhance the visual design to further engage children
  • Broaden the age group with features like:
    • Custom story inputs from users
    • User-defined story themes
    • Options for parents/teachers to select themes tailored to children’s interests
