Inspiration

Many of my peers and friends were diagnosed with dyslexia at an early age. Even today, many exclaim how reading and spelling is very difficult. However, those who received private tutoring often had an easier time with spelling today. My goal was to implement a cost-free method of allowing children with dyslexia to develop their reading and writing skills at an early age so they don't have issues later.

What it does

Dyslexia has three main components.

The first feature is the anagrams game. Studies show that playing anagrams helps with word organization and thought processing skills, important skills for all students. The app has a feature to play anagram games with various words to allow the student to develop word recognition skills.

The second feature is the word practice exercise. The user can iterate through various words and pictures (all stored on Firebase) and create a connection between the text and the image.

The third feature is the information page. People can read more about dyslexia and what they can do to help.

How we built it

Dyslexicon is built with Android Studio, Java, and Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

There were some final issues with running the program so the video isn't a live demo. However, the problem is being worked on and will be fixed shortly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of using Firebase in this project, because I primarily use front-end development. This was a new way for me to experiment with novel technologies.

What we learned

I learned about Android development since this is my first time coding an Android app with a database.

What's next for Dyslexicon

Dyslexicon will include an account feature (stored on Firebase) to allow students to track their learning progress. There will also be a feature to add images to the Practice Exercise firebase so the practice is more personalized.
