Inspiration
Understanding the dire impacts of the overuse of synthetic dyes on our planet, its inhabitants and the natural environment, we were inspired to provide individuals with skills and methods to dye fabric from food scraps.
What it does
The purpose of “Dye-It-Yourself” is to educate individuals through hands-on experience. Our website will include a customizable interactive component where users can choose a food scrap and drop it onto a white t-shirt to see what different food scrap dyes can create. We also offer dyeing packages, which contain thrifted garments and cleaned food scraps for individuals to learn how to dye fabric at a low cost.
How we built it
We used a template to create a website using HTML and CSS. This is the main platform for users to navigate through information relating to mission, dyeing instructions, and dyeing package deals. We also designed a Figma prototype which demonstrates our design idea of the customizable interactive component where users can choose a food scrap and drop it onto a white t-shirt to see what different food scrap dyes can create.
Challenges we ran into
Both team members are unfamiliar with HTML, Javascript, and CSS, so we first had to overcome the learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to code in HTML and CSS using a template and learned how to use figma in less than 24 hours! We are also proud of designing a plan that focuses on education and verified information to ensure social media safety. We focus on sustainability and inquiry so that any individual can start to learn how to dye fabric in a low-barrier environment using accessible material, and providing relevant information because there is a lot of information on the internet that may be misleading or not fact-checked.
What we learned
Through our project, we learned a lot about the dyeing process and how dyeing fabrics can be done by anyone. We also learned that as a team of 2, we played to our strengths as much as we could in order to produce the best possible result while learning to use different tools and templates.
What's next for Dye-It-Yourself
We hope to implement the customizable interactive component of our website to allow individuals to learn more about different colour palettes and to pique their interest in natural dyeing from food scraps. We conducted a survey and many participants voiced that they wish garments could retain the colour of their dyed product and dyestuff could produce a variety of colours. Thus, to incorporate their input, we hope to fully develop the content on the website so that users have all the information to dye fabric from more varied food scraps, and incorporate verified information on mordants and modifiers (products that cling dyestuff onto fabric)
