Inspiration
We were inspired by old western films, unsolved cases (*hint: infamous outlaw Billy the kid), and escape games.
What it does
This is an escape room style game, where the player has to talk to various characters and gather clues in order to achieve their goal - finding the thief in the town.
How we built it
We built using Unity 3D. We used a pre-made model for the setting, and created original characters and storyline. We also wrote c# scripts for additional actions and game-play as needed.
Challenges we ran into
Debugging the C# scripts was rather difficult, especially the ones controlling the dialogue of the characters as there were many interacting components that could have broken and it wasn't always clear which one had the error. Additionally, we were unfamiliar with Unity 3D and had to research many things that were different from the 2D version we knew.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of building a working 3D game as it is our first time doing so. Prior to this we only made a 2D game, so we're proud that we were able to understand the 3D version well enough to make a game.
We're also proud of the fact that we have a story that the player can follow along as they play.
What we learned
We learned how to use Unity 3D, including how to import models outside of Unity's own collection. We also learned how to add and manipulate multiple cameras in order to make a more realistic viewing screen for the player.
What's next for Dusty Tracks
Next for Dusty Tracks, we want to make the game so that the player has more freedom about how to gather clues and solve the mystery rather than follow the script we wrote exactly. We also want to expand the world of this game by adding interior sections to the buildings which the player can interact with as well. We also want add animations to our characters so they move more smoothly.
