Inspiration

Dust was inspired by the idea that at the end of a person’s journey—whether literal or metaphorical—the only thing they truly carry with them is their memory of living. The surreal desert environment reflects the quiet emptiness we all walk through at different points in life, where the objects and moments we encounter feel symbolic, fleeting, or half-remembered. The film asks a simple question: if everything you cling to eventually turns to dust, what remains? Its answer is quiet but powerful—your memories.

What it does

The film follows a solitary traveler moving through a stark, dreamlike desert. Along the path he encounters strange objects and scenes—odd, haunting fragments that feel meaningful but incomplete. When he finally reaches an ATM in the middle of nowhere and tries to withdraw money, the machine instead dispenses Polaroid photographs. Each image connects back to the things he passed earlier, revealing that the desert journey is actually a walk through his own memories. “Dust” becomes a meditation on the value of lived experience and the idea that memories are the only riches we carry forward.

How we built it

The visuals were generated using AI video-generation tools including Kling and supporting image models to craft consistent surreal landscapes and symbolic objects. Adobe Premiere Pro was used for sequencing, pacing, color work, and shaping the narrative flow, while Adobe After Effects handled stabilization and atmospheric enhancements such as heat shimmer and particle drift. The soundtrack was chosen and layered to reinforce the feeling of quiet reflection and introspection. The film was built shot-by-shot to guide the viewer toward the final twist at the ATM.

Challenges we ran into

A key challenge was generating surreal imagery that still felt grounded in emotional meaning. AI tools can easily drift into randomness, so it took careful prompting, curation, and multiple iterations to create imagery that matched the metaphors in the story. Maintaining consistency in the traveler’s clothing, gait, and silhouette across shots was another hurdle. The ATM sequence was also surprisingly complex—getting an AI-generated machine to appear realistic in a desert environment while producing Polaroids required heavy refinement and compositing. The biggest challenge, however, was ensuring that the visual clues subtly aligned with the final reveal without giving too much away too early.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of how the final piece weaves mystery, symbolism, and emotion into such a short format. The desert atmosphere feels immersive and lonely, the objects the traveler encounters feel meaningful without being literal, and the final ATM/Polaroid reveal lands with clarity and impact. The project succeeds as both a visual poem and a narrative twist, and the cohesion across AI-generated scenes is a major accomplishment.

What we learned

This project emphasized how important thematic clarity is when working with surreal visuals. We learned how to push AI models toward imagery that supports a narrative idea rather than random abstraction, and how pacing plays a crucial role in delivering a twist in a micro-drama format. We also learned more about maintaining character consistency across generations, and how to use editing and color to unify divergent AI outputs into a single cohesive world.

What's next for "Dust"

There’s potential to expand Dust into a longer surreal-philosophical anthology—each short examining a different facet of memory, identity, or regret. Another future possibility is exploring other “desert” moments in the traveler’s life, or building a stylistic companion piece focused on a different elemental environment. The core theme—memories as life’s only true currency—has many directions it can grow.
