Inspiration

Travel opens doors to new experiences, yet language barriers often prevent travelers from fully immersing themselves in local cultures. Inspired by the success of Duolingo’s gamified language learning, we set out to create a solution tailored to travelers. By combining cultural immersion with personalized language practice, Duolingo Travel Companion helps users prepare for authentic and meaningful journeys.

What it Does

Duolingo Travel Companion combines XR technology with personalized learning to create an immersive, location-based language and cultural experience.

Users can explore virtual recreations of iconic destinations, such as Montmartre in Paris or a bustling marketplace in Tokyo, while practicing relevant language skills.

Central to the platform is Duo, an AI-powered language coach that:

  • Tailors lessons to each user's learning style.
  • Provides real-time travel advice and itinerary suggestions.

The gamified design keeps users engaged with:

  • XP rewards.
  • Daily challenges.

Together, these features make language learning an interactive and enjoyable part of travel preparation.

How we built it

We began by conducting extensive UX research and competitive analysis to understand the needs of travelers and identify gaps in existing language learning tools. Using these insights, we created a user persona and designed a detailed travel itinerary, which became the foundation for the conversational AI script. This ensured that the interactions were realistic, personalized, and aligned with travelers' actual experiences.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating conversational AI into an XR setting proved to be a significant challenge due to the complexity of creating dynamic, context-aware interactions. To overcome this, we pivoted to prototyping in Figma, allowing us to iterate quickly and focus on refining the user experience before diving into full-scale development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of our commitment to user-centered design, making accessibility a key priority throughout the project. By grounding our work in real user needs and focusing on inclusivity, we were able to create a prototype that serves a diverse range of travelers.

What we learned

Working with XR technology highlighted the many variables involved in ensuring accessibility, from interface design to user interaction. While the time constraints limited how much we could implement, the experience reinforced the importance of prioritizing accessibility in innovative technologies.

What's next for Duolingo Travel Companion

We’ll explore expanding the platform to include augmented reality (AR) features, allowing users to engage with immersive lessons during real-world travel.
