Duo-SL

Inspiration

More than ever, communities comprising of people with impairments are isolated due to the lack of ability bidirectional communication.

What it does

Duo-SL is a flash-card style learning tool for the general population to get more familiar with ASL. The website allows users to autogenerate common words which are each accompanied by the respective ASL signs guide.

How we built it

Duo-SL was built using Vite + JS for the frontend and then ElevenLabs for text to speech for people who learn better through auditory + visual methods.

Challenges we ran into

We initially wanted to add a machine learning aspect for ASL recognition to help both with learning ASL and communicating real time with it. Unfortunately, this task was too difficult given the time frame. We hope to implement this type of feature in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're happy to have successfully learned more about the ElevenLabs API for integrating audio with ASL.

What's next for Duo-SL

We hope to improve the flash card system to include common phrases and sentences instead of singular word. Additionally, we hope to implement the communication feature as well.
