Inspiration
I’ve always loved PvP card games, but I wanted to create something that just feels easy to click on and spend 30 seconds to a minute or two on your Reddit timeline. is my take on that—a fast-paced card game with light mechanics and exciting duels.
What it does
When you click the 'Start Game' button, you're matched against another player. The goal is to use your cards strategically to reduce your opponent’s health to zero. After the match, you modify your deck by removing one card and adding a new one. You also have the option to publish your deck, allowing others to challenge it. When someone plays against your deck, their opponent will follow your recorded moves until they run out, at which point the AI will use random cards from your deck.
How we built it
As a solo developer, I started by designing the core mechanics, making sure that it was scalable, with the hopes of making a strong alpha by the end of this hackathon that I could build upon after the hackathon ended. I mainly used React, Tailwind for styling, and Redis as a database.
Challenges we ran into
Devvit documentation is neat as a starting art tool, but during development, it's quite tricky to navigate, and I was able to survive thanks to the AI tools. I also had no javascript experience prior to this
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Actually getting a playable build was an amazing moment. I had a lot of roadblocks and wondered if I would even be able to get my app integrated with Redis at all.
What we learned
I mostly became familiar with devvit tools and redis interaction with web view applications. I am now much more confident i can
What's next for
I am going to fork the project and continue working on it on another testing subreddit to get an actual polished build in the next two weeks. I really fell in love with the gameplay loop, and now that a lot of the bones are in the app, it's going to be a blast designing new, exciting, risky cards for users to interact with. I am not eligible for the payment system, so I am going to continue this as a passion project.
