Across Africa and many emerging economies, over 500 million small businesses are the backbone of local communities, yet most operate without access to business intelligence, affordable financing, digital tools, or expert guidance. Entrepreneurs spend countless hours tracking inventory, negotiating with suppliers, managing payments, and serving customers instead of growing their businesses.

We envisioned a future where every entrepreneur has an AI-powered operating system that works around the clock like a team of experts. Inspired by Google's Gemini, autonomous AI agents, and the opportunity to democratize entrepreneurship, we built DukaAI—an Autonomous AI Operating System that enables any business owner to run an intelligent, data-driven business directly from WhatsApp.

Our mission is simple: make world-class business operations accessible to every entrepreneur, regardless of location, technical skills, or income.

What it does

DukaAI is an AI-native operating system that autonomously manages the day-to-day operations of small businesses.

Instead of acting as a simple chatbot, DukaAI coordinates specialized AI agents that continuously execute business tasks, including:

  • AI-powered inventory management and stock optimization
  • Intelligent demand forecasting using LLM Gemini models
  • Automated supplier discovery and price negotiation
  • WhatsApp-based customer support and order management
  • M-Pesa payment reconciliation and financial tracking
  • SACCO and microfinance loan eligibility analysis

Business owners interact naturally through WhatsApp while Gemini-powered agents execute workflows in the background, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on customers and growth instead of administration.

How we built it

DukaAI was designed as an AI-first, cloud-native platform where autonomous agents operate continuously with minimal human intervention.

Our architecture combines:

  • Google Gemini 2.5 Pro for reasoning, planning, forecasting, and decision-making
  • Vertex AI for production AI workloads
  • Google Cloud Pub/Sub for asynchronous event-driven communication
  • Firestore for operational business data
  • BigQuery for analytics and business intelligence
  • WhatsApp Cloud API as the primary business interface
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers connecting financial institutions, suppliers, and external services
  • Hedera for tamper-proof transaction auditing and verifiable business records
  • Next.js dashboard providing real-time operational visibility
  • Node.js microservices coordinated through an event-driven architecture

The platform continuously monitors business events, reasons over incoming data, coordinates specialized AI agents, and autonomously executes operational decisions while keeping business owners informed in natural language.

Challenges we ran into

Building an autonomous business platform required solving several complex engineering and operational challenges.

One of the largest challenges was coordinating multiple AI agents while maintaining reliable communication across distributed services. We designed an event-driven architecture capable of handling asynchronous workflows without sacrificing consistency or responsiveness.

Integrating diverse systems—including WhatsApp, payment platforms, supplier services, cloud infrastructure, and financial institutions—required standardized interfaces and secure authentication mechanisms.

Another challenge was ensuring that AI decisions remained transparent and auditable. We addressed this by maintaining immutable operational records and providing clear explanations for recommendations and automated actions.

Finally, designing for entrepreneurs with varying levels of digital literacy meant prioritizing simplicity. We intentionally chose WhatsApp as the primary interface because it removes the need for users to learn new software while making advanced AI accessible through everyday conversations.

Most importantly, we built a platform capable of creating meaningful economic opportunity by allowing small businesses to compete with enterprise-level operational capabilities.

What we learned

Building DukaAI fundamentally changed how we think about AI.

We learned that the future of AI is not individual prompts—it is autonomous systems that continuously reason, coordinate, and execute work on behalf of people.

We also discovered that successful AI products require much more than powerful models. Trust, explainability, seamless integrations, reliability, and user-centered design are equally important.

Perhaps our biggest insight is that entrepreneurs don't need more dashboards—they need intelligent systems that quietly handle complexity while allowing them to focus on serving customers and growing their businesses.
