Inspiration
This project is dedicated to our younger siblings. As the older siblings in our families, we recall our own experiences growing up with limited access to the internet. Looking back, we wish our parents hadn't been so cautious about it; we believe that if they had taught and encouraged us to use the internet responsibly, we would have benefited from it. It's been about a decade; times have changed, and children are now being required to engage with the internet at a younger age. Children are learning to code in elementary school, and with the introduction of new artificial intelligence, there's no doubt that they will be having classes about AI interaction soon. Being completely disconnected from the internet, especially when all your peers are online, can put you at a disadvantage. We want to provide young users with the right knowledge and tools to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. We want to offer them a platform where they can learn proper online safety and conduct in a safe environemt, ensuring they make the most of the internet's vast potential while staying protected from its risks. By embracing technology in a responsible manner, we hope to prepare the younger generation for a safe and educational future online.
What it does
Our app aims to do two things: educate and encourage. The main body of the app is made to educate young users and has two features. The first feature creates scenarios related internet safety and conduct and asks users to make a choice about what to do. The second feature gives the user a prompt and asks the user how to identify what is and what is not misinformation. If the user chooses correctly in both features, they get points, or "diamonds," but if they choose incorrectly, they lose points.
How we built it
For our app, we used Codestudio.org, a beginner-friendly site that one of our team members had been using for some time and had become very familiar with. With the help of Sr. Huma, we were able to modify a Python code from ChatGPT to create our extension.
Challenges we ran into
Ironically, our biggest challenge was using DevPost. After writing quite a long project description, we went to the net page, only to find out that all our progress had been delayed! It was quite disappointing to rewrite our project description again, but we did not get discouraged and rewrote our description, even better this time. Another challenge we ran into was when we changed the design of one of our screens but had to change our code to suit the design change. Changing the code midway was very difficult for us, so we plugged the code into Chatgpt and asked it to change the code to accommodate the new design. Luckily, we were able to have the code changed easily.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud to have created our extension. Even though it's only a demonstration of what we hope to implement, we were able to learn a lot about programing with Python in this section of our project.
What we learned
We've learned a lot about the challenges young kids face in today's digital world. It's disheartening to realize that children are among the most vulnerable online, and with it becoming increasingly difficult for adults to effectively restrict their internet usage, they are targeted by cyberbullying and other dangers. ##What's next for Duct Tape Inshallah, we want to improve our point system to the point that the user can exchange their points for prizes and other things. We also want to add some more educational information about the different types of misinformation, as well as more scenarios, to our app. We also want to change our extention to scan messages that are being recieved. We will also consider any feedback that you may have for us.
