Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the competition itself, where we wanted to create a fun and heartwarming experience centered around a memorable NPC. After several brainstorming sessions, we chose a mother duck as the main character. The ducklings were inspired by my girlfriend’s younger brother, who is always playfully bothering her while she patiently takes care of him—just like the dynamic we wanted to capture in the game. This personal connection added warmth and humor to Duckpool’s concept.
What it does?
Duckpool is a single-player Tycoon set in a colorful forest, where players help a mother duck entertain her energetic ducklings by building exciting water slides. Each slide keeps the ducklings busy, giving the mother time to rest. The goal is to create a relaxing yet engaging world full of life and charm.
How we built it?
Duckpool was built using the Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor. The process was enjoyable and collaborative—each team member focused on their strengths. I handled the 3D design, textures, and overall visual style, while my teammate worked on scripting, logic, and systems. Continuous communication helped us keep the world cohesive and polished.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing the cartoon-style visuals with smooth gameplay performance was a key challenge. We wanted the world to feel vibrant but also optimized for players.
What we learned?
We learned how to combine creativity and technical precision effectively, as well as how to make efficient use of Horizon’s tools for both scripting and design.
What's next for Duckpool?
In future updates, we plan to add new mechanics such as eggs that can be purchased from the mother duck’s table, allowing players to exchange ducklings for higher-quality ones that earn more currency. We aim to keep improving Duckpool and continue creating new, imaginative worlds on Horizon.
