Inspiration

During my studies I found it hard to juggle uni and getting to my MMA classes at their set times, so I started training alone a lot. I found it extremely hard to stay focused, so I started using a pre-recorded voice coach to guide me. The problem was it always called the same combinations, and I wasn't keeping track of what I was throwing at all. So I thought: what if I built the exact thing I wanted for my Shipaton submission?

What it does

🥊 Four voice coaches for boxing, Muay Thai and MMA 🎯 Pick your own pace, combos, fighting style and sport 🎧 Your own music keeps playing in the background, ducking under the coach ⏱️ More training modes: sparring rounds, conditioning intervals, guided stretching and a variety of timers 🎙️ Voice notes to record in the car after training, while it's still fresh 📈 Progress tracking and analytics from every session 🏆 Arena with weekly leagues to compete against other fighters ⭐ Duckin Advanced: workout builder, combo builder, monthly reports and advanced metrics

How we built it

Claude Code was my programmer: I came up with the ideas and the design, and Claude brought them to life. Expo and React Native with TypeScript, so one codebase runs on both iPhone and Android. ElevenLabs for the coach voices, generated in advance and cut into hundreds of short clips that the app stitches together live. RevenueCat for subscriptions and coach purchases, with prices pulled straight from the store and Customer Center to manage plans. Supabase for accounts, cloud backup and the Arena leagues, with row level security on every table.

Challenges we ran into

Account creation and proper account deletion were a big struggle. Getting the voice clips to work in the combo engine was particularly tough and took a lot of time, because at first they didn't hit the pace needed to feel like a real coach. I kept at it and got it working in the end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Definitely having a fully working app on both iPhone and Android that's nearly ready for the App Store and Google Play. I never thought I'd make it through a project this big, but I got it done with Claude.

What we learned

How difficult app development really is, and how much design and detail goes into making an app that looks good and feels easy to use.

What's next for DUCKIN

More coaches Release on Google Play, then the App Store Get it into the hands of people like me who wished this existed
