Inspiration
Waddle Into STEM is a website with mini games that helps introduce STEM concepts to elementary-school kids. When we were kids, the websites that were available to us were so fun and educational that we wanted to give back to our community and put our own twist on the way fun STEM facts were presented to kids. This website is a great resource for kids under the age of 12 to learn about STEM subjects.
What It Does
With Waddle Into STEM, kids are given a quick and easy way to learn about various STEM subjects presented as simple questions and answers that are easy for them to grasp. We included science flash cards, multiplication questions, and more items that don't require the student or child to focus their attention on a question for lengthened periods of time. We allow the kids to have a fast-paced, fun learning experience that doesn't require a lengthy attention span, but still eases them into the challenging subjects of STEM.
How We Built It
We utilized repl.it, a collaborative coding website, which allowed us to work together on our html, css, and Javascript for our project. We used data structures such as arrays, functions, headers, and nested for loops. Additionally, we extensively researched the subjects at a beginner level to develop questions that kids in grades K-5 could understand and learn from.
Challenges We Ran Into
We had to scrap our original concept of developing a game with godot, since it posed too many challenges for beginner programmers such as ourselves. Instead, we decided to scale our project down to a more static website where we utilized github accounts and learned the nuances of revision control. Despite these challenges, we still accomplished so much through our perseverance and love for problem solving. We were able to create a fun, interactive website that accomplished our goal of teaching kids under 12 about STEM.
Accomplishments That We're Proud of
Even though we scrapped our original idea, we still managed to create a completed project. We have learned a lot about development and coding html, css, and Javascript. We knew none of these languages at the beginning, and we are extremely proud that we managed to learn them in less than 24 hours. These are extremely valuable skills that we will continue to use in our future computer science endeavors.
What We Learned
We learned many valuable skills like collaboration, time management, coding (html, css, Javascript), planning, and how to take care of ourselves and teammates under stress. In addition, we improved on skills like design, teamwork, timeliness, responsibility and dependability, programming, and effectively asking for help when we needed it. This was an exceptionally beneficial experience for us.
What's Next for We are Duckies!
This is only the beginning of our computer science journeys. We are so excited to continue learning more coding languages and improve our development skills. We have accomplished so much in the past 24 hours that we feel confident that we can continue creating bigger and better projects in the future.
