Duck Hunt: City Attractions Finder

Inspiration

When brainstorming about what to do for this project, we wanted to make something that would make everyone's lives easier. Both of us have been on vacation before and we know how difficult it can be to decide where to go, especially with many people. Therefore, we decided on a project that would give the best suggestions on where to visit.

What it does

Our project is very simple and straightforward. Duck Hunt uses the Travel Advisor API to supply the user with information about popular attractions based on a specific city. The user is first asked to enter the city in which they want to travel, in which Duck Hunt will give the top attractions with a description of the name, address, an image and other specifics about the spot.

How we built it

This website was simply made through HTML, CSS, Javascript, and the Bootstrap framework to style the website. Javascript was used to parse through the data retrieved from the API as well as handle the API requests. HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap were used to style the website in a playful, user-friendly manner.

Challenges we ran into

This was both of our first hackathons, so we came in with little experience of how things worked. We were also both fairly new to programming which meant that we had to go through a lot of trial and error and even work with languages and frameworks that we hadn't worked with before. We also ran into many internet problems throughout the hackathon, which stunted our progress and motivation to continue at times.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are both proud of what we were able to accomplish with the experience that we came into LA Hacks with. We created a functional website that gives users a list of the top attractions based on the city entered and learned many new skills along the way.

What we learned

Through this project, we were both able to learn about the potential and power that APIs hold, as well as how to integrate them. We also gained valuable experience in HTML, CSS, and Javascript, which are languages that we both see ourselves using in the future.

What's next for Duck Hunt: City Attractions Finder

In terms of what's next for Duck Hunt, we plan on incorporating a user authentication system in which the user can sign up or log in to their account and save/favorite locations they have been to. We plan to continue building on the functionality of Duck Hunt and use it as a beneficial resource to planning out trips.
