Forest fires, bad air pollution
Seattle recently reached #1 in the world for the worst air quality in addition to the torrential rain and spring snows that have been plaguing our city. Although climate change cannot be stopped overnight, small efforts combined and multiplied by many has significant power in reducing our carbon footprint. WE LOVE CROFFLES AND THEY CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT EARTH.
What it does
Our project "Dubs Go Green" encourages small, daily habits that can contribute to healing our Earth. When a task (such as "Walk/bike to your next destination") is completed, a piece of the Progress Puzzle is revealed. Completing all of the tasks will unveil the surprise image. Users may also sign up and login to save their progress.
How we built it
We utilized React.js to create the frontend (task list, puzzle pieces) and Google's Firebase for the backend (to enable the Login function that stores email addresses).
Challenges we ran into
- Our team members were beginners to using GitHub so learning the ropes were our first challenge.
- We also had to readjust our project idea from a social media app to our Dubs Go Green project because our initial idea would require learning too many new technologies, and we wanted to focus on growing in one area effectively instead.
- Teammates had to balance studying for their MATH midterms right after DubHacks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of our teamwork. It was a great deal of fun and the hours went by incredibly fast with the excitement. Additionally, each teammate tried something new, whether it be React, GitHub, design, or Firebase. We each learned and contributed a new skill then seamlessly incorporated them together to create Dubs Go Green, and this was incredibly rewarding.
What we learned
Our GitHub skills have increased and we have also learned how to use Node.js to run a server. In addition, we developed stronger teamwork, encouraged each other, and leveraged each of our teammates' unique strengths.
What's next for Dubs Go Green
We plan on adding a feature to increase incentive for users to complete the challenges. For instance, completing the challenge 5 times will earn the user acorns which they can use to purchase different puzzle images. If we find a sponsor, acorns can also contribute $2 to a user's Husky Card to prevent Hungry Hungry Huskies.
