We came into DubHacks wanting to solve a problem: increasing civic engagement through volunteerism. Through our own personal experiences, we’ve experienced a lot of frustration when it comes to trying to finding local volunteer opportunities, so we took a quick survey of fellow DubHackers and asked them if they
1. Actively search for volunteer opportunities and
2. Would want to volunteer.
We found that most students do not actively seek volunteer opportunities but would love to use their skills to help out a worthy cause - it’s just too difficult to go about looking for the perfect organization.
Through some competitive analysis we realized that websites that are supposed to help citizens find organizations are disorganized and messy. We aim to make finding volunteer opportunities for good samaritans easier and more streamlined in order to encourage more people to volunteer.
We created a web application that utilizes the Facebook Graph API and a database of nonprofits in your area to match Facebook users to a non-profit that they would be interested in. You simply just sign in with your Facebook account and our algorithm searches through your profile to find keywords and phrases to “match” you with an organization that matches your interests based on your social media.
