Inspiration
We looked at how data centers require a lot of energy consumption and cost to maintain due to the needed temperature control to sustain the hardware in these centers. Inspired by the Boeing initiatives to cut down energy, we came up with a way to cut down on how much energy data centers consume by utilizing geography and climate.
What it does
The plan is to build two data centers on opposite sides of the globe, carrying the same data. We operate only one data center depending on if the local climate is favorable - or requiring minimal energy to sustain temperature. By strategically placing two data centers at polar opposites climates, we can always have one center to operate in optimal climate and switch back and forth within the year to have our data center running on minimal energy consumption year round.
How we built it
This is only a proposal / idea to implement for every company who stores their data in data center(s).
Challenges we ran into
Something to note for this idea is to find out which two place on the globe that has the strategically opposite climate patterns to place our data centers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Not only does our plan save energy, it also doubles down as a data backup solution, especially for companies like Boeing where data is a crucial part of their frequent operations. Building two data centers and implementing our plan can help you save energy year-round, not to mention having your data backed up and ready to go in case one data center has complications.
What we learned
We were inspired by Boeing's prompt, which was to think outside of the box. There are so many ways to accomplish Boeing's initiatives, and most of them are widely known and implemented. However, to come up with this idea pushed us to think beyond what has been done and what is obvious.
What's next for Dual Data Centers - an Energy Saving Plan
More research would be done regarding which type of companies would benefit most with our plan. There should also be more specific suggestions as to the pair of locations dual data centers can be located at.
