Recalled Drug
Inspiration
We were motivated to build DrugCipher as a result of the rising increase in counterfeit pharmaceutical products across the globe. Recently according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), contaminated syrups manufactured by a pharmaceutical company in India led to the death of over 70 infants in Gambia, numerous cases amongst others made us come together to brainstorm on a feasible yet efficient solution to alleviating counterfeit drug productions.
What it does
DrugCipher enables drug manufacturers to record their drug data on the blockchain using NEAR protocol, these drug data are then encrypted on Secured QR codes that are placed on drug containers, packets, and blister packs for scan purposes. Manufacturers can also recall their products rendering them unusable. The DrugCipher mobile app enables patients to scan the QR code and check the authenticity of drugs while earning tokens to promote consumer protection. For each scanned drug, manufacturers are able to track the scan location on their web interface.
How we built it
While building DrugCipher, we started our journey by meeting professionals in the pharmaceutical industry and regulatory bodies across the state, presenting our idea, evaluating and modifying it to tackle the problem of pharmaceutical counterfeiting; before moving on to architecting the technical structure of the project. DrugCipher was built on Express/Node JS, React-Native, MySQL, and NEAR protocol. The user interface was built with React JS and some of its libraries.
Challenges we ran into
Quite note-worthy to know building DrugCipher was not a rosy journey at all, we faced several challenges from evaluating our idea to making sure we were actually solving the problem we intended to solve and not just a mediocre walk-around. We also faced some challenges with the technical aspect of the project, especially deciding the most pragmatic and efficient way to build DrugCipher so it scales and handles as many human interactions as possible, we are thankful to have gotten this far with the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have been able to deploy a fully functional MVP of DrugCipher, which supports all the essential features needed in tackling pharmaceutical counterfeiting.
What we learned
Over the past 7 weeks, we’ve learned a lot about pharmaceutical production, distribution, and consumption. And over this duration of time, we’ve re-evaluated the role of technology in propagating this industry to its next phase.
What's next for DrugCipher
Although DrugCipher is still in its infanthood phase, we have a lot of big plans for it, including support for:
- Supply Chain
- MarketPlace
- Inventory management
