My Drug Awareness Project Journey

Inspiration

My journey into drug awareness began with a deep concern for the rising rates of substance misuse in our communities. I wanted to create a resource that would educate people about the dangers of drugs and promote safe choices. This project is a culmination of my desire to make a positive impact and provide valuable information to those who need it. I have a background in chemistry and previously worked as a pharmacy technician so this topic peaked my attention

What it does

The website serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding drug interactions and risks. It offers an interactive game created through Google Slides that presents scenarios on saying no to drugs and how to respond in challenging situations. Additionally, the site includes three lesson plans with interactive quizzes covering:

  • Drug interactions and risks
  • Overview of stages of drug development
  • Preventing substance abuse

How we built it

I started by setting up my Django framework and familiarizing myself with its components. With only two months of experience in Python, I had to learn quickly. I utilized credible sources like DrugBank Online for factual information on drug interactions and effects. To enhance user experience, I incorporated a quiz template from FlexiQuiz, allowing me to create engaging assessments easily.I leveraged resources like ChatGPT to help with front-end framework styles and organization, which was invaluable for refining the aesthetics and usability of the site.

Challenges we ran into

As someone with no prior industry experience, almost everything about this project was a challenge. From designing the front end to managing data and implementing functionality, I encountered obstacles at every turn. However, my adaptability and creative mindset allowed me to navigate these difficulties.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud to have created an informative and interactive platform that educates users about drug interactions and substance abuse. The game, lesson plans, and quizzes provide engaging ways for individuals to learn and retain important information. Merging my background in chemistry with web development has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to contribute to a cause I care deeply about.

What we learned

Throughout this project, I gained a foundational understanding of web development using Django and Python. I learned how to structure a web application, manage data, and create interactive features. The importance of using credible sources for information became clear, and I developed valuable skills in creating engaging educational content.

What's next for Drug awareness and Interactions

Moving forward, I aim to expand the website by adding more interactive features, additional scenarios for the game, and more lesson plans. I hope to gather user feedback to improve the content and make it even more engaging. My goal is to continue raising awareness and providing resources that empower individuals to make informed decisions regarding drug use.
