Inspiration

A digital alternative to geocaching, that encourages to go outside explore their local area and beyond to discover user-generated 'Spot' notes.

What it does

DropSpot lets you share digital notes at real-world locations. Walk past a Spot, see what strangers left behind. No accounts to stalk, no followers, no fake realities; just authentic messages tied to real places. Busy locations become Hotspots, encouraging users to seek them and discover the hype around them.

How we built it

First we brainstormed the idea as a team, listening to each others ideas until we finally found one we were all proud of. Then we designed the architecture of the project. Our next step was to assess each team members strengths and weaknesses so that we could divide the project into subtasks. We used Python and Flask for the Backend, hooked up to a MySQL database. For implementing the frontend we used HTML, CSS and Javascript. To integrate the frontend and the backend we used Flask Post and Fetch API.

Challenges we ran into

With it being our first project of this scale, we struggled with the time-management of the project over the short period of time. We overcame this by using GitHub collaborative repositories allowing us to delegating tasks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a fully functional full-stack web application with commercially viable applications and the possibility of it becoming a published application in the future.

What we learned

We learnt how to combine and use new, different technologies to create a fully functioning application

What's next for DropSpot

A proper mobile app so the location stuff actually makes sense to use on the go. We'd also love to add more features such as a social element (e.g. commenting on notes, reactions, friends), in addition, the ability for businesses to promote themselves on the platform.
