Inspiration

Grocery shopping can be time-consuming and frustrating. An average shopping trip takes 43 minutes (Time Use Institute, 2016). Take 52 weeks in a year and shopping once a week, that accounts for 36 hours at the least.

What could people have done to use that time in a wiser manner?

What it does

Ask friends to buy exactly what you need, split payments within the blink of an eye and get the best deals in real time.

All in one free, convenient app.

What is the problem that we are solving?

So, you wanna save time? Ask a friend to shop for you right?

That adds up to a whole new level of complexity. Often enough, friends would fail to obtain the right product and to deal with money contributes to a different story as well. The idea of co-shopping is a relatively simple task but is often poorly executed.

In 2016, the FMI Grocery Shopper Trends study concluded that 28% of co-shoppers (58% of all customers) mentioned that the process goes only somewhat well or not well at all; 32% said the partner shopper was overspending; 25% said that the co-shopper was choosing the wrong items; 10% stated that payment was often not fair when split up.

How we built it

After hours of brainstorming, we finally got the idea and proceeded to code a backend and a frontend for it. We then realized that the deadline is sooner than the time we have left, so we did as much as we could, started creating a UI for it first.

Who are users and/or customers?

We are targeting big supermarket chains to agree to adopt the service and average consumers that go grocery shopping on a regular basis to use it.

What’s currently missing that they need and which our solution provides?

A much simplified way to co-shopping, which saves time, money, and maintain friendships.

Challenges we ran into

Thinking of an idea which would be beneficial towards communities. Not having enough time to complete within a short timeframe.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It is a solid idea, and we made the first steps to turning this into a reality

What we learned

To be more equipped for future Hackathons in terms of time management, and programming skills.

What's next for DropCart

Continue with the creation of the app and alpha stage testing.
