Inspiration
This webpage was inspired by the Facebook group called "W&M Places I've Cried Group." Our mission has two components. Firstly, we wanted to create platform that allowed for having a centralized database for W&M crying affairs. Secondly, we hope to highlight the increased stress that the pandemic has caused for students, staff, and faculty alike and validate the collective struggle of the current situation.
What it does
Users of the website can make comments about where they cried, when they cried, and how satisfying the cry was. Users can also view past comments made on the platform.
How we built it
We used CSS, HTML, and PHP code to develop the site. To store data from the comments, we connected the website to a MySQL database using phpMyAdmin.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to work on the project simultaneously, as we both participated from different remote locations. Additionally, we had trouble exporting the database so that we both could access the functioning website. There were also a few stylizing issues that came up along the way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were really excited to end up with a functioning site! Going into the hackathon, we weren't sure what our project would look like, but we are both proud of the final product. Neither of us had any background in using databases, so this part of the project was totally new!
What we learned
We learned how to use database software, how to code in php, and a little on how to make SQL queries. We also were able to strengthen our html and css skills.
What's next for Drop a Tear
We would love to refine the comment capability, so that in the future we can add data visualizations based on the information collected (like where most people cry). We also hope to possibly add a login feature and strengthen the overall security of the site.
